Cuba is a unique local that can offer visitors one of the most exotic, beautiful, relaxing, and incredibly fun adventures that they will ever have. The best way to make sure that you get the most out of the island on your vacation is to stay somewhere that will give you all of the tools and opportunities to do so. One place to stay is Guantanamo Bay. Just kidding, you definitely don’t want to stay there and if someone wants to take you there, run and don’t get caught! To make sure your stay is all paradise and no Guantanamo, we’ve compiled a list of the Ten Best Hotels to stay at while in Cuba.
Hotel Playa Pesquero
There is no shortage of amazing at our first hotel on the list, Hotel Playa Perquero. The resort was designed to mimic the two neighboring cities of Santiago and Holguin. There are plenty of low rise buildings for guests to stay in with long pathways that meander through tropical gardens to connect them all together. If you find the grounds to be too tiring to walk, no worries because there is a train that guests can use to get around to different parts of the resort. The hotel is also equipped with an ice cream parlor, seven bars (one of which is 24 hrs), a beer garden and an internet cafe. There are several types of restaurants on hand ranging from Mediterranean to Caribbean. If you are looking for more of an adventure you can also choose a range of activities to do, including horseback riding, scuba diving, and deep sea fishing.
Melia Cayo Coco
This is the perfect place for couples looking for privacy and a child free resort. The minimum age of stay at Melia Cayo Coco is 18 years old. Being adult only guarantees a mature experience and the opportunity to meet people that had the same vacation idea as you. This resort has several restaurants and bars to choose from. This adult playground is on Las Coloradas Beach and has rooms that sit on stilts above the lagoon.
Sol Rio de Luna & Mares Resort
This combo resort features two sections, Luna and Mares, and although you will be placed in one the facilities of both are available to you. This resort has a lot to offer its guests from Mexican and French cuisine to a Cuban cafe and Garden Bar. The Sol Rio Luna & Mares Resort is in Guardalavaca and sits directly on the white sand of Esmeralda Beach. The Atlantic has never looked so beautiful as it does from the shores of Cuba.
Sol Cayo Guillermo
Sol Cayo Guillermo is in Cayo Guillermo and is a perfect destination for families looking for a stress free and informal vacation. The low rise buildings are directly on the beach making the ocean part of your front lawn. A very cool feature to this hotel is that it is very close to a large offshore coral reef. While there isn’t much to do outside of the hotel you can rent mopeds and speed around the streets and even take a trip to visit its sister hotel down the road.
Sol Cayo Coco
This is a hotel that is all ages friendly as there is a lot of variation to keep everyone happy and entertained. There is direct access to two beaches while you stay at this resort. It is located on Las Colorades which offers many different water sports for guests, such as parasailing. But it is also right next to Playa Larga beach. The option of what beach to go to can be huge when looking to lay in the sand with privacy and quiet. Sol Cayo Coco also offers a great massage service to rid you of any tense nerves that may have carried over from the previous week!
Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort and Spa
This is your typical Cuban resort. It is our second adults only location on our list which makes it great for couples and honeymooners. The Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa offers a range of different cuisines to eat and bars to drink at. The spa center is equipped with a swimming pool, massage parlor, and several different treatment options. Lets get rid of those wrinkles! The buildings are bungalow style which makes for a very romantic and serene stay. This was also one of the “Best Hotels 2012” on TripAdvisor.
Melia Cayo Santa Maria
This is the perfect stay for those who are just trying to sit by the pool or the ocean all day and soak up the sun. Melia Cayo Santa Maria makes it very easy to do just that. With two free form swimming pools and a pool bar it may be hard to leave for the beach! That is until you find out that there is a beach side restaurant and beach bar that you can take full advantage of as well. And you shouldn’t find it too hard to do so because like many other resorts here in Cuba, it is located right on the white sandy beach.
Paradisus Varadero Resort & Spa
This is another one of those resorts that has it all. There is something for everyone at Paradisus Varadero Resort & Spa as it is secluded on Varadero beach and far from the bars, restaurants, and shops of the resort center. For the more active, there are water sports to take part in and for the ones who are looking for more of a pampering experience the spa offers a sauna, steam room, hydro massage, whirlpool, and beauty treatments. There are also six different restaurants to choose from when it comes time for a meal. That is never a bad problem to have.
Blau Costa Verde Beach Resort
This colorful resort is on the east end of the island on Pesquero Beach. What I like about this resort that many other resorts lack, is a natural feeling. The trees and tropical plants that grow all over the grounds out onto the beach make it seem as if the Blau Costa Verde Beach Resort was built right into nature. As if it was meant to be there. It also sits in a unique spot directly in the middle of a fishing village and the mountains inland. Both can be seen from the grounds of the resort.
To finish off our top ten list of hotels is the Iberostar Varedero in Varadero. As you can see from the picture above, this hotel has incredible and cool architecture built into the pool. There are white columns that seem to resemble Greek and Roman architecture. These details in the infrastructure of the resort are idyllic and may be one of the reasons that this hotel made the “Best Hotels of 2012” on TripAdvisor. The massive free form pools and options for entertainment and relaxation make this one of the best hotels on our list.
So get out there and enjoy all Cuba has to offer in one of these superb hotels and resorts. Also don’t forget to smoke a cigar or two!
